How do I apply for an unabridged birth certificate for my Children?

As of the 1st of June 2015 all minor travelers under the age of 18 are required to present to the South African immigration offices at our borders an unabridged birth certificate in addition to the regular travel documents such as a valid passport, visas etc. The new law was introduced to curb child trafficking. In the preceding year, around 15 000 minors under the age of 14 had moved through South African borders.

How do I apply for an unabridged birth certificate?

Applying for this document through South African Home Affairs can take many weeks and will require a number of follow up visits to ascertain whether the document is ready for collection. It is best that prospective travelers have this document in hand prior to making any concrete travel arrangements as the possibility exists that the processing of your application may be delayed which will seriously scupper your travel plans. 

The documentation required to accompany an application for an unabridged birth certificate including the following:

  • Original or certified copies both parents identity documents
  • The child’s ID number
  • Completed BI-24 Form, to be completed with black ink pen

What makes the unabridged birth certificate different from a standard birth certificate?

Before we proceed, it is important to note that the South African home affairs department no longer uses the term unabridged birth certificate so as to avoid confusion. All birth certificates issued to newborns are now unabridged birth certificate, simply renamed birth certificates. These new documents reflect the full details of both biological parents or a child’s legal guardians.
